Cabernet Franc Private Reserve 2013, Bratanov Family Winery, South Sakar Mountain, Bulgaria

Cabernet Franc Private Reserve 2013, Bratanov Family Winery, South Sakar Mountain, Bulgaria

One of the signature reds of this prominent family owned and run Bulgarian winery, again from the glorious in Bulgaria 2013 vintage. Opaque coloured with pronounced nose of dark chocolate, cedar and the typical for the variety green peppers. Medium to full bodied with very concentrated dark berry fruit notes, allspice/cayenne and even hints of nutmeg and further earthy/herbal nuances. Exceptionally well balanced and complex Cabernet Franc that wil combine very well with duck, lamb or veal dishes.

The team at Bratanov family winery made their first Cabernet Franc Private Reserve back in 2011 – a coupage of a total of 3 French oak barrels at a total of 900 bottles. In 2014 the wine was chosen by DiVino magazine amongst top 5 rarest wines in Bulgaria.

The next vintage that the quality of the grapes reached levels that the team consider optimum for the grape variety, was exactly 2013, the very best vintage in Bulgaria for the last decade. This wine is now an almost signature for the winery.

APPELLATION: Sakar Mountain, South Bulgaria                    GRAPES: 100% Cabernet Franc

TERROIR: The onshore winds of the Aegean Sea, penetrating through the Maritsa River Valley, provide for a transitional Mediterranean climate, with long hot summer and mild winter, no ground frost. The region has one of the highest values of sunshine for Bulgaria.

VINEYARD: Altitude 150-180m, 7 years old, the soil types are mostly sandy-clay and maroon, slightly stony, with good permeability and structure.

WINEMAKING: All grapes are hand-picked on the same day in crates in the morning cool temperature with consideration to the phenolic ripeness, brix, acidity and pH, manually selected and carefully sorted before crushing. The coupage is precisely made by selecting the winery’s 23 best oak barrels, mostly new and part used, made in different sizes and with different origin of the oak – French, Bulgarian and Hungarian. The wine was aged for 24 months in oak, then further 32 months in bottle before release to the market at the end of 2018. Unfined and unfiltered.

COLOUR: Beautiful dark ruby with soft overtones.

NOSE: A complex nose with abundance of “black aromas” such as ink, blackberries, blackcurrants, dark chocolate, combined with spicy notes of pink peppercorns and eucalyptusscus.

PALATE: Full but at the same time smooth body with velvety tannins and a multi-layered taste profile with intense expression of ripe black fruits. Very long, piquant and intense finish.

FOOD MATCH: Côte de boeuf, matured cheeses, dark chocolate desserts

PRODUCTION: 4660 bottles

DRINKING: 2018-2028
