Caroline Gilby MW's “FEMALE HANDS IN BULGARIAN WINE” Mixed Wine Case with Video Presentation and Tutored Wine Tasting

Caroline Gilby MW's “FEMALE HANDS IN BULGARIAN WINE” Mixed Wine Case with Video Presentation and Tutored Wine Tasting

The Old Cellar is teaming up with Caroline Gilby MW, the UK’s leading specialist in wines from Central and Eastern Europe, who will guide you through a selection of four wines made from local Bulgarian grape varieties. All four are made by great winemakers who happen to be women, so the tasting will also explore what the country is doing well so that very nearly half of Bulgarian wineries have women leaders or winemakers.

Order the mixed case and you will be sent a Zoom link to join us on Wednesday 27th at 7:00 pm to watch and participate in the event, with the opportunity to ask questions on the topic and meet the 4 winemakers. Alternatively, if you cannot join the live presentation – you will be sent a link to the video recording to open the wines and taste along in your own time while watching the presentation.

Deadline for orders for the wines to be shipped and arrive in time for the event – Monday 25th Jan 12.30pm (UK only).

SKU Caroline Gilby MW's Mixed Wine Case
  1. AXL Rose Valley Misket Limited Edition, 2019, Chateau Copsa, Rose Valley

100% Misket – an indigenous Bulgarian white grape variety, the clone for AXL being Karlovo or Rose Valley Misket, which is only grown in the little region of Rose Valley in Central Bulgaria. The wine is made by Madlena Kuzmanova and the winery’s team, sourcing the grapes from a single vineyard, where specific pruning, canopy management and green harvesting are applied to ensure the highest possible quality of fruit.

  1. Tamianka Wild Fermented Shishmanovo Vineyard, 2019, Bratanov Family Winery, Sakar Mountain

Probably the best white produced from Tamianka in Bulgaria – a local selection of Muscat grown for centuries in Bulgaria and some other Balkan countries. The South Sakar region is one of the sunniest parts of Bulgaria and really suits this variety. All grapes are hand-picked from the Bratanov family’s Shishmanovo single vineyard and vinified by their oenologist Maria Stoeva using the winery’s signature wild fermentation.

  1. Gamza, 2016, Borovitza Winery, Danube Plain

Produced from 100% Gamza, a local variety at home in North West Bulgaria. It was handpicked in late September from 50 year old vineyards on sandy clay soils and made by the winemaker and owner Adriana Srebrinova with minimal intervention winemaking, no filtration and with no added sulphites.

  1. Melnik 55, 2018, Orbelia Winery, Struma Valley

To finish – this lovely red from Struma Valley, the far South West of Bulgaria, made from Melnik 55 (a.k.a. Early Melnik Vine) - the signature red local Bulgarian grape variety of the region, by the winemaker Desislava Hitova. All the grapes come from Orbelia’s own vineyards – 15 year old vines near the village of Levunovo. Silver Medal winner at Decanter World Wine Awards 2020.
