APPELATION: Struma Valley, Bulgaria
GRAPES: 67% Rubin and 33% Broad Leaved Melnik
CONCEPT: The concept of Mitra is to be a wine in full harmony with the nature. To achieve this the team at Orbelus winery looks closely into their great variety of vineyards each year and their aim is the grapes to be naturally and organically grown, no sulphites to be added at all in the winemaking process, as well as literally everything that is going in the making of Mitra to be entirely natural and local, including the own local yeast that is naturally present in the vineyard. To show their appreciation for her longstanding service to the winery, the owners named this wine after the lady that is in charge of the agronomist team (consisting predominantly local ladies) that are looking after the vineyards of Orbelus year round – Mitra Ilieva.
VINEYARDS: The winemakers Kiril Miladinov and Nikolay Stoyanov have chosen a coupage of two indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties – Rubin and Broad Leaved Melnik. The Rubin (a crossing between Syrah & Nebbiolo) is from a 5 years old vineyard near the village of Kromidovo with Southeastern exposure, sandy clays soils and at 210-220 m above sea level. The Broad Leaved Melnik is an ancient local grape variety, grown only in the Struma Valley, and comes from an old 40 years old vineyard in the Trup Tarala area, again near the village of Kromidovo – it has a western exposure, sandy clay soil with high clay content and is at 200 m above sea level.
WINEMAKING: The Rubin was picked in Sept 2018, and the late ripening Broad Leaved Melnik – in mid-October. All the grapes are hand-picked, with a meticulous selection of the best grapes and discard of any damaged ones. In-house yeast cultivated and selected from the winery’s own vineyards is added to the part crushed grapes. The alcohol fermentation is followed by short post maceration. The fermented wines from both Rubin and Broad Leaved Melnik are blended at the stage of their malolactic fermentation. After the end of all biological processes the wine is cooled down to 4-5°С and aged on the lees with regular stirring in stainless steel vats for a few months. No sulphites added, non-filtered.
