  1. Pét-Nat Funky Mavrud 2019, Georgiev/Milkov, Thracian Valley

As funky as it gets in Bulgaria – a very lightly blushed bubbly made from 100% Mavrud (the signature indigenous Bulgarian red grape variety) from 40 year old vineyards near the village of Novi Izvor. After gaining vast experience in various places around the world in 2014 Petar Georgiev and Radostin Milkov started their own project. The young winemakers set off on a journey through the wine corners of Bulgaria in order to find grapes from pristine terroirs for their wines.  Their style of winemaking which is defined by many as “pervert” aims for their wines to feel modern and to drink elegantly, revealing the authenticity and beauty of the indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties. Only 2900 bottles made!

 

  1. H’s Kaylashki Misket 2019, Haralambievi Winery, Danube Plain

From this “new kid on the block” winery on the Bulgarian wine scene - a great expression of the local Bulgarian white variety Kaylashki misket. The wines from their H’s series translate Haralambievi’s vision of how with modern practices in the vineyard and in the winery the typical for the region grape varieties can express their true character and qualities. The husband and wife team of Dimitar and Tsvetelina plant and look after their vineyards side by side and in 2018 after gaining experience and confidence in their mission and with the support of their team they invested in building their own winery that specializes in production of small batch high quality boutique wines. Only 6500 bottles made!

 

  1. Orange Keratsuda 2019, Libera Estate, Struma Valley

Another very rare wine made from 100% Keratsuda - an indigenous Bulgarian white grape variety native to Struma Valley with very limited vineyards. Often ignored but the team at Libera estate has taken the challenge to show its full potential in a different and modern trendy style – as an Orange wine. The estate was founded in 2013 and is another relatively new project on the wine map of Bulgaria managed by 2017 Bulgarian Sommelier of the Year Jivko Enchev. Their focus is predominantly on local Bulgarian grape varieties along some international ones. Their goal is to show the true face and potential of the Bulgarian wine by combining the local traditions and the contemporary vision of the team. Only 1501 bottles made!

 

  1. VNYRD Broad Leaved Melnik 2018, Damyanov Family Winery, Struma Valley

A 100% Broad Leaved Melnik - an ancient local indigenous Bulgarian red grape variety grown only in Struma Valley in Bulgaria. It used to be a favourite of Winston Churchill back in the day and he had annual shipments to the cellar at 10 Downing street. The beginning of Damyanov winery was thanks to their grandpa who was a soldier in World War II. As a natural extension of this family’s love for their old vineyards the idea of creating a family-operated winery was born and nowadays, after years of hard work and dedication, it has finally come to life - a boutique family winery, where they make craft wines with individual character, based on their family values, love and passion for winemaking - Bulgarian wines for true connoisseurs. Only 2000 bottles made!
